Codes and Conventions of Magazines

This week i have been investigating how magazines are created and using the termonology. I looked at wide range of magazines to see what the purpose of thier frount cover was and wether it made me what to buy to magazine and if not who the target audience is. For example: this Good Housekeeping magazine has a simple masthead with a simple font and several coverlines about staying heathly and keeping fit. There is two main colours on this frount cover red being the masthead colour and the main coverline and purple which is on some of the coverlines. This cenrtal image is using direct address and is a cover model. Also the coverlines use direct address by using 2nd person prounous like 'your' to communicate with their audience.

This magazine on the other hand has a differnt target audience and uses differnt elements on their covers to intice readers to buy thier magazines. This Cosmopolitain magazine had a colour theme of red which is the background colour and the coulor of the dress that the cover model of the central image is wearing. Cosmo uses puff and in this magazine is offering 'free mineral bronzer' for their readers this makes them want to buy the magazine more. Also they are offering readers '100 extra pages' this again is a method used to intice readers. The coverlines in this magazine compared to the other magazine are very differnt as cosmo uses sexual refernces to intice their readers whereas Good Housekeeping is about keeping healthy this shows that they are differnt target audiences.
